"Fiona" One-of-a-kind Original Folk Art Calico Kitten Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

This is Fiona. Fiona has a lovely, well-mannered family.

Well, almost. Sometimes, she and her little brother, Ziggy, get a little wild on their bicycles.

Sometimes Mama yells and waves her paws in the air. It's funny when she does that.

Sometimes Fiona and Ziggy play Pat-a-cake.

Or they play with Ziggy's car, on the handmade quilt Mama made just for Fiona. It has a hand-embroidered blue butterfly in the center. Fiona and Ziggy pretend it's real and try to pounce on it.

When Fiona gets tired, she loves to take a nap under her quilt.
Mama hand stitched her quilt from pieces of cotton fabric she had from the dress she made for Fiona.
Fiona is approximately 10 inches tall when standing and approximately 6 1/4 inches tall when sitting. Her curled tail helps her to sit up. She is made from 100% cotton fabric which is painted with acrylic paint. Her face is sculpted from paperclay with painted thread whiskers that were inserted before the clay dried. She is from my own original pattern and was handsewn and handsculpted by me, Elizabeth Ruffing. No molds were used. She is a completely original and one-of-a-kind art doll. Fiona is signed and dated, and She is sealed with matte varnish for protection and preservation. She is meant for display only.
Fiona comes with her handmade doll quilt and her lovely original dress. They are also made from my own design and patterns, as is the hand embroidered butterfly in the center of Fiona's quilt. Fiona's dress has a pretty blue ribbon at the waist. Fiona tries to keep it clean and neat, like Mama says.
More information about Fiona can be found on her webpage...come visit Fiona's webpage.

"Henry the Owl", New Giclee Print by Elizabeth Ruffing

"Henry the Owl", my second watercolor on Claybord, is printed and available in my Etsy shop. This print is also up for auction on eBay.

I used my Claybord tools to scratch out the whitest feathers on his head and add lots of fine details. Henry's eyes are particularly striking. He's a sweet little fellow, kind of shy :)

Here's my second video, of me painting "Henry the Owl". I just put it up over on my YouTube channel. Please visit my online personal journal for more in depth information about my paintings, and the latest on what I'm up to in my studio.

"Matilda", New Lop Rabbit Print by Elizabeth Ruffing

My lop-earred rabbit is painted, printed, and available in my Etsy shop! I am also putting this print of "Matilda" at auction on eBay.

The orginal watercolor painting for this print was my first on the Claybord, which made for some interesting effects. The detail that you can add by scratching the surface is great. Using a dental pick and some of the Claybord tools that came in the Claybord toolkit, I was able to add fine lines and textures for the lace trim on her turquoise Victorian dress, and her fuzzy bunny fur.

I also put together my first video for my new YouTube channel, of myself painting this painting, which you can watch below. Hope you enjoy it!

"Ziggy" One-of-a-kind Original Tuxedo Kitten Folk Art Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

It’s bedtime for Ziggy.

He’s wearing his yellow pajamas, and he’s supposed to be sound asleep. But his bright little eyes are wide open, and he’s ready for another adventure.

When Ziggy’s mother comes into the room, she sees only the white tip of his tail and one yellow foot sticking out from under the bed.
“What are you doing, Ziggy?” she asks, rolling her eyes.
“I’m taking my car for a ride through the tunnel,” answers Ziggy, in muffled tones.
When at last Ziggy has curled up in his bed, he is already making plans for the next day.

“I bet I could take my car for a ride under a waterfall,” he thinks, as he drifts off to sleep.

Ziggy is an original one-of-a-kind work of art, created from my own design and pattern. He is made from 100% cotton fabric which is sewn, stuffed, and completely hand painted with acrylic paints. I sculpted Ziggy’s face from paperclay, which I smoothed into his fabric head. His whiskers are made of painted cotton thread. They were threaded through the paperclay before it dried. No molds were used to create Ziggy.
Ziggy’s curly white-tipped tail supports him very well, so he can sit all by himself on a shelf or a table, or in a cabinet. His arms and legs are button-jointed with decorative metal buttons.
Ziggy’s pastel yellow onesie pajamas are painted on, as are his periwinkle blue collar, cuffs, and buttons. His kitty feet are needle sculpted to give definition to his little kitty toes. He is approximately 5 3/4 inches tall when sitting and about 8 1/4 inches long when stretched out.
Many hours of careful attention went into the making Ziggy. I have been instructed in sculpting by the very talented Max Bailey, my studiomate, who is known for his fine craftsmanship and artistry in creating his amazing and unique animal dolls. I am very thankful to Max for sharing his expertise with me. I hope my dolls will help spread as much good cheer as his do.

Ziggy is up for adoption on our website. Please visit him on his own webpage for more information. Extra photos of him can be found on Flickr. We'll be posting our new dolls in our online doll gallery, which I am still working on expanding to include already adopted dolls and their stories. Please come have a look!

"Jazzie" the Siamese Ballerina Kitten, Original One-of-a-kind Art Doll by Max Bailey

They named her Jasmine, after the sweet smelling flower, but everyone calls her “Jazzie.”

Jazzie is a little kitten with a big dream. Someday, she wants to be a prima ballerina.

She has the jumping thing down, and the leaping thing. Her somersaults are outstanding, and she’s trying to think of a way to work them into her first ballet recital.

The only really disappointing thing to Jazzie is that her little limbs are not yet long enough for her to put her paws together above her head in that graceful ballerina arch. Her ears always get in the way.

Today, Jazzie is twirling around the dining room table.
“Jazzie, you really are very weird,” her brother says, looking up from his violin practice.
Jazzie ignores him. She has just discovered that if she concentrates really hard on trying to catch the tip of her tail in her mouth, she can spin even faster. Depending on where her tail is at the moment, she can spin to the right or spin to the left!
When Jazzie is too dizzy to continue, she stretches out on the floor and watches the ceiling go around. She imagines she can hear the audience loudly applauding. The curtains part for the fourth curtain call. There is Jazzie, the prima ballerina, at center stage, her paws extended high above her ears in that graceful ballerina pose. Bouquets of roses are strewn all about the stage. Jazzie looks down at the orchestra and sees her brother, playing first violin. He looks so proud of his little sister!
"Jazzie" is my new, original, one-of-a-kind art doll, and you can read all about her on her own personal web page. We are working on getting more doll photos and stories up in our online doll gallery...So be sure to come take a peek! We have a little preview of dolls to come, our currently available dolls, and some favorites who have already been adopted. I've been giving Elizabeth some sculpting lessons and we'll be unveiling her new kitten doll very soon. Elizabeth is a very gifted artist and dollmaker. I'm sure you'll enjoy her new work. Check back soon!

"Emily", New Original Art Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

This is "Emily". I finished her some time ago, but only recently got her photos together and posted on Flickr. Emily was inspired by the Izannah Walker dolls of the 1800's, and is named after the poet, Emily Dickenson. I designed both her body pattern and her dress pattern myself, and sewed each in 100% cotton fabric. She has an antique reproduction Jumeau style face that I made using papier mâché. Her hand-sculpted ringlets on either side of her head are made from paperclay .

Emily was gessoed , then detailed with acrylic paint, and sealed with matte varnish for protection. Her blue eyes were hand painted as well.

Emily's fingers are hand quilted and lightly wired to give them a gentle curl, and her arms bend slightly at the elbows. Her arms bend at her shoulders, and her legs bend at her hips and knees.
I made Emily's dress from a tan calico quilter's cotton. It is dotted with little burgundy and navy blue flowers. Her sash ties in the back to make a pretty bow. I sewed two pin tucks at the bottom of her dress and added a big three inch hem to make the skirt stand out nicely.

Her antique-style undergarments are carefully detailed with painted-on lace, pink buttons and a bow. Her shoes are painted on as well, with tiny buttons up their sides.
Emily is currently up for adoption in our eBay store. I'm putting together some blank greeting cards with photos of Emily and some of my other dolls too. I'll be putting the cards up for auction on eBay soon. Please stop by our store and have a look around!

"Huggy Bunny", Original Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

This is my new "Huggy Bunny". He is an original one-of-a-kind doll, created from my own original design and pattern. He is hand signed on his bottom. Huggy Bunny is entirely handmade and is meant to be displayed and loved, and he is sturdy enough to be played with. His body is made of 100% cotton quilting fabrics, which have been fused to an extra layer of cotton sheeting for durability.

His little tail, and the edges of his clothes, and his pink parts are machine stitched with a zig zag over the raw edge appliqué. His ears and joints have been hand quilted. He has no loose or removable parts. He is stuffed with Poly-fil polyester stuffing.
I hand embroidered a coral stitch on his booties. His cute little eyes and mouth are hand embroidered as well.

Huggy Bunny has love to give. Lots. And he's happy to give it. He is a cheerful and agreeable sort.
He is available for adoption in my Etsy shop. Please go visit him. Huggy Bunny is also part of the Etsy for Animals January challenge. 10% of sales (not including shipping) from my Etsy shop and my mom's Etsy shop will be going to animal charities. This month we are hoping to raise some money for The Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary in light of their recent emergency need for donations.
Michele from Etsy for Animals added Huggy Bunny to her "Bunnies Helping Bunnies! EFA" treasury list on Etsy, along with my "The Rabbit Dances" greeting cards. Michele also posted Mr Bunny on the Best Friends Network forums, which is part of Best Friends Animal Society, a group that advocates kindness to animals and an end to pet homelessness. The post links to Etsy for Animals members' bunny creations that are also for sale. Many of the members are supporting the Buckeye House Rabbit Society this month. So, check them out too. Thanks, Michele!

Etsy for Animals: Artists Helping Animals

Mom and I joined Etsy for Animals just recently. This is a group of artists and craftspeople who have shops on Etsy, and who love and want to help animals. Many of them donate a percentage of their Etsy shop sales to animal charities each month. They also have an Etsy for Animals Shop. Items from this shop are donated by members, and 100% of the proceeds go to animal charities. You might want to check out their blog too.
We will be donating 10% of our Etsy shop sales (less shipping) to animal charities each month. My mom, along with Max Bailey, and later Abby Laurence, can be found at Art from the Studio of A E Ruffing on Etsy, and I can be found at The Art of Elizabeth Ruffing on Etsy.
Incidentally, I've also added the EFA links on the right sidebar of our blogs, along with a new categories section on the Ruffing's blog. Now it is a bit easier to find things...I hope.

Art Nouveau-inspired Floral Prints by Elizabeth Ruffing

Here is a whole garden of iris, and some white roses. I adore iris and have a big bed of them out my back door, in a huge variety of colors. I also love Art Nouveau and William Morris' designs. With these paintings, I was exploring doing my own repeat patterns in that vein.

These are all available as mini giclée prints in my Etsy shop or on our Ruffing's website, all on 8.5 x 11 inch archival-quality, 100% cotton, 300 gsm weight fine art paper. They are printed with archival-quality, Epson UltraChrome pigment-based ink for longevity. Each print is signed below the image in pencil.

They are currently $22.00 plus postage, and they can be ordered through Etsy, through our website, or by emailing us at Ruffing's. Some are also available in print sets of two or three giclées. They can be found by clicking on the highlighted titles beneath these photos, and scrolling down the individual print webpages. Please visit!

New Handmade Winter-themed Holiday Cards by Elizabeth Ruffing

I've just put together a few sets of blank holiday cards for my Etsy shop. They are suitable for any winter holiday, or to be given just because. Above is "The Rabbit Dances".

This is "Snowy Night". Both images are printed on 100% cotton archival art paper, using Epson archival pigment-based ink for longevity, which means they can be saved, framed, and displayed.

I attached the images to acid-free ivory cardstock using acid-free glue to make cards that are 5 by 6 1/2 inches. They are blank inside, and they come with matching ivory envelopes.

They are available in sets of four, with a choice of four of one image, or two each of each image. They come bagged as a set and are currently priced at $8.00 per set of four, plus postage. They can be ordered on Etsy, or by emailing us at Ruffing's. Happy holidays!

"Clara" OOAK One-of-a-kind Original Izannah Walker-inspired Folk Art Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

This is Clara, my new original folk art doll! I designed both her body pattern and her dress pattern myself. Her design was inspired by Izannah Walker dolls, and her face is a Jumeau-style antique reproduction. She is one-of-a-kind. There are no others like her.

Her body and her dress are both 100% cotton fabric. Her dress is a beautiful pink quilter's cotton scattered with pale pink chrysanthemums, a symbol of innocence, hope, and cheerfulness. I sewed two pin tucks and a three inch hem at the bottom of the dress, to make it stand out nicely. A sash ties in a pretty bow at the back. All the seams are carefully finished.
I made her head using a combination of Creative Paperclay and Li-Qua-Ché pourable papier mâché. She is entirely hand painted first with a layer of gesso, then finely detailed with acrylic paint, and then sealed with matte varnish for protection.
She is jointed at her shoulders, hips and knees, and her bottom is weighted with Poly-Pellets so she can sit nicely. Her hands and arms are lightly wired to allow her fingers to have a more realistic curl, and to allow her elbows to bend slightly.
Her hand-sculpted ringlets go all the way around her head, and little pin curls cover the top of her head.

Her antique-style lace-trimmed undergarments are hand-painted and detailed with painted white lace trim and tiny buttons.
Her hand-painted boots have little painted gold buttons on their sides. I named her Clara after the character of that name in The Nutcracker. Lots of hours went into making Clara an heirloom-quality doll. She is meant for display, and would make a lovely addition to a young, or a young-at-heart, girl's room.
Clara will be up for adoption on eBay. More photos of Clara can be seen on Flickr.

"Goodnight Irene", One-of-a-kind Original Art Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

After much hand basting, machine appliquéing, stuffing, machine and hand sewing, "Goodnight Irene" is complete.

I made her pattern basing it on my much loved Miss Annabelle, a favorite doll from my childhood. She is a big doll, about 22 inches tall, and about 14 inches seated. I drew and painted her face, giving her very pretty green eyes.

Here she is seated with "Lovely Lucy". Both are available in my Etsy shop. More photos can be seen on Flickr.
I also spent some time today organizing our ruffingsartdolls Flickr photo album, adding sets off to the right to make finding dolls of special interest a little easier.

I've been updating our eBay store as well, adding information to our My World page. I hope to do a complete overhaul on our About Me page soon.
I've added a really cool Etsy widget to the home page of elizabethruffing.com I'm enjoying looking at all those thumbnails of my artwork grouped together on the page. So colorful.
And, we have Max Bailey cat dolls still to photograph!

"Lovely Lucy" New One-of-a-kind Art Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

This is Lovely Lucy. She is an original one-of-a-kind work of art, created from my own design and pattern. She is signed and dated. Lucy is entirely handmade and is meant to be displayed and loved, and she is sturdy enough to be played with. Her body is made of 100% cotton quilting fabrics, which have been fused to an extra layer of cotton sheeting for durability. Her bottom is weighted with Poly-Pellets so she can sit nicely while she looks around. She bends at her shoulders, hips, and knees.

I have hand painted her pretty face with acrylic paint and fabric medium, which I then heat set for permanence. Lucy is decorated with high quality ribbon trims, Rick Rack and machine appliquéd fabric. She has no loose or removable parts. She is stuffed with Poly-fil polyester stuffing. Her ponytails are hand quilted and are a chocolate color. Her eyes are hazel.

Lucy is approximately 10 1/4 inches tall when seated, and approximately 18 1/2 inches long when lying down.

Lucy will be available shortly in my Etsy shop. More photos of her can be seen on Flickr.

I am also still at work on more flower baby fairies, star babies, and another new doll pattern. Max Bailey has some new kitty dolls to photograph too. Stay tuned for more pictures in the near future!

New Chrysanthemum Flower Baby Fairy Art Doll by Elizabeth Ruffing

"Greta", my new chrysanthemum flower baby fairy is finished! I'll be putting her up for auction on eBay starting Friday, June 15th at about 9pm EST.

She has an antique reproduction baby face of papier mâché. Her head and pointed ears are paperclay, and her body is 100% cotton cloth. Her pale green butterfly wings with yellow spots are hand quilted and she is entirely hand painted with acrylic paint. She will be sealed with matte varnish for protection.
She has hidden button joints which make her posable, just like "Rosa" who left for her new home at the beginning of this week. I managed to get a few pictures of them together before she left on her journey.

Greta has an oak-colored stand that lifts her in the air so she can practice flying, and running through the air. She enjoys that.
You can view more pictures of them both on Flickr.

I'm also introducing some mini art plaques. I've painted 6 by 6 inch solid poplar wood to coordinate with my artwork and mounted several reproductions of my original watercolors on them. Above are "The Fairy and the Dove" and "Fairies and Butterflies".

Clockwise from the upper left these are "The Guardian", "Laurence with Primroses and Daffodils", "Iris and Foxgloves", and "The Rabbit Dances". They are all made using archival grade materials and I will be varnishing them for further protection. Prints of these images are available on our website.

Rosa has an antique reproduction baby face of papier mâché. Her head and ears are paperclay, and her body is 100% cotton cloth. Her periwinkle butterfly wings are hand quilted and she is entirely hand painted with acrylic paint. She will be sealed with matte varnish for protection.

I will be offering "The Fairy and the Dove" and "Fairies and Butterflies" as handmade mini art plaques for auction at the same time. I made them myself from archival materials and I carefully coordinated them to make a nice set of companion art pieces for Rosa.

Please pay a visit to eBay this week and bid! In the meantime, you can see more photos of Rosa on Flickr.

"Sigrid the Star Baby" is making her debut! Sigrid is a newly born star. She is jointed at her shoulders and hips so she can lie down or sit. She is made of 100% cotton which was gessoed, painted with acrylic artists' paint, then sealed with matte varnish for protection...just like I would treat an original painting.

She has an adorable pouting baby face, with one little tear on her cheek.

I am offering a giclée print of "Moon and Star" as well. It makes a lovely companion piece for Sigrid because it goes so nicely with her turquoise and gold onesie. "Moon and Star" is featured on her hang tag.

New Elizabeth Ruffing Fairy Prints

These are two new fairy art giclée prints for our Ruffing's web site. Both are a standard size 8.5 by 11 inch image size on 9.5 x 12 inch fine art paper. Both are fantasy pieces based on my original watercolor and pen and ink paintings. Above is "Moon and Star" which depicts the moon as a woman with butterfly wings and a star as a young girl. Both are descending toward the horizon at dawn.
This giclée is entitled "The Moon Sings a Lullaby". I was imagining what kind of lullaby the moon would sing, if the moon could sing, to help people drift off to sleep. I thought of the sounds of katydids, which I’ve always loved to listen to on summer nights. And I thought of the poppy field in The Wizard of Oz, which caused Dorothy and her friends to fall asleep on their way to The Emerald City. This is the moon singing us all to sleep with a lullaby full of poppies and katydids.
Both prints are also available in my Etsy shop. Please visit!

Each giclée has a decorative floral border surrounding the central image. Above is "Pansies".

"Purple and White Iris"

Elizabeth Ruffing's New Etsy Shop

Elizabeth Ruffing's new Etsy shop is now open. I've stocked it with many of my fine art giclées and a couple of original art quilts as well. I'm planning on making the giclées on the Ruffing's site available on Etsy, to add an extra ordering option. I'll be updating the Ruffing's site to include buttons that link to Etsy on each giclée description page.
This is a giclée of my original watercolor painting, "The Rabbit Dances".
This is a one-of-a-kind original art quilt wall hanging of hand-dyed batiks framing a canvas print of my original watercolor, "Valentine", which shows a pale pink iris on a muted magenta, art nouveau-inspired wallpaper background.

These, and other works of art are currently available in my
